Marc Gasol (6 ft. 11) is Spanish professional basketball player currently playing for the Toronto Raptors. Born on January 29th, 1985, he was born and raised in Barcelona, Spain. He and his family moved to the Memphis suburb of Germantown, Tennessee, after his older brother joined the Memphis Grizzlies. In high school, Marc played basketball at Lausanne Collegiate School, Memphis where he earned the nickname “The Big Burrito”. In 2003, Marc
was named Division 2’s Mr. Basketball following a senior season where he averaged 26 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks per game. He returned to Spain after he graduated from Lausanne to play in the Liga ACB for FC Barcelona. He played with Barcelona for three season before joining Girona in 2006. In 2008, Marc was named ACB’s Most Valuable Player.

His NBA journey started in 2007 when he was picked as 48th overall by the Los Angeles Lakers. On February 1, 2008, L.A Lakers traded his draft right to Memphis, that saw him going to Memphis and his brother going to the Lakers. Marc set a franchise rookie record for field goal in a season with 53 percent, a record previously held by his brother with 51.8 percent in 2001-02. Subsequently, he earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors after averaging 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds as a rookie and 14.6 points and 9.3 rebounds in 2009-10 season; a career best.

He helped lead the Grizzlies in a 13-game run in the 2011 NBA Playoffs, posting 15.0 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.15 blocks. Memphis, which had never won a playoff game before 2011, defeated San Antonio Spurs (top seeded in the Western Conference). Marc led the Grizzlies in field goal accuracy and blocked shots in each of his first NBA seasons.

Gasol re-signed with the Grizzlies on 14 December, 2011, to a four-year $58 million contract. Marc, on 23 January, 2012 was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played 16-22 January 2012. He earned his first NBA All-Star honors on February 9, 2012, as a reserve for the 2012 NBA All-Star Game. In 2012-13, Marc was one of only six players to average at least 1.5 blocks and 1.0 steals per game. He led a Grizzlies defense that allowed a league-low 88.7 ppg during the regular season. His +5.4 score differential ranked second among NBA centers, allowing Memphis enjoy a +7.5 score differential whenever he was on the field.

April 2013, he became the first Grizzlies player to be named NBA Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the All-NBA Second Team. In th 2013-14 season however, a left MCL sprain Marc suffered on 22 November against San Antonio Spurs left him sidelined for 23 games, earning him a career low 59 game.

Marc earned his second NBA All-Star selection in the 2014-15 season, earning his first All-Star start. He was also named to the All-NBA First Team for the first time, averaging a career best 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.8 assists for the Grizzlies 55-win. He scored 30-plus points five times, set career high fields on goals made and attempted, as well as free throws made and attempted. Marc was the only in the league with at least 1,300 points, 600 rebound and 300 assists.

July 13th, 2015, Marc re-signed with the Grizzlies on a five-year maximum contract worth $110 million. He recorded his first career triple-double on 20 November, with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. Unfortunately, he also set a new career low for games played with 52 after missing the second half of the season with a broken right foot.

His second career triple-double came on December 5, 2016, with 28 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in a 110-108 double-overtime win over the New Orleans Pelicans. December 12, he was named Western Conference Player of the Week for games played 5-11 December, marking his second career Player of the Week award and the ninth time a Grizzlies player won weekly accolade. On January 25, 2017 he scored a career-high 42 points in a win over Toronto Raptors. The following day, Marc was named an NBA All-Star for the third time in his career.

Marc Gasol passed 10,000 career points on December 2, 2017, with 27 points in a 116-111 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He recorded his fourth career triple-double points with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assist in a game against Los Angeles Clippers on January 26, 2018. Gasol played his 700th career NBA game and made his 689th start in February 2018, surpassing Mike Conley Jr. for the most games started in franchise history.

Gasol became Grizzlies’ all-time career rebound leader in November 2018, after passing Zach Randolph (5,612). He tied a career high in December after making at least one 3-pointer in 13 consecutive games. In his 14th game, he set a new record after making a 3-pointer on January 2 against Detroit Pistons.

On 7th January, 2019, Gasol’s time with the Grizzlies came to an end after he was traded to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for C.J. Miles, Jonas Valanciunas, Delon Wright and a 2020 second-round draft pick. Gasol helped the Raptors reach the 2019 NBA Final, where they defeated the Golden State Warriors in six games. With his championship joining brother Pau’s two championship in 2009 and 2010, they became the first set of brothers to win NBA titles.

Apart from playing in the NBA, Marc was named to the Spain National Team in 2006, for the FIBA World Championship in Japan, replacing Fran Vazquez. Spain went on to win the gold medal in Japan, as well as at the 2009 FIBA EuroBasket. He won silver medals at the 2007 FIBA EuroBasket, the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. His second World Championship Title came at the 2019 World Championship in China.
Marc Gasol is undoubtedly a remarkable basketball player, with honors to show for it. Memphians will definitely remember him for a very long time and someday place him in their walls of Legends.
