play for the same team (Grizzlies) but not at the same time.
Today, let’s focus on the older Gasol, Pau.

Pau Sáez is a Spanish professional basketball player, born July 6, 1980. He is a six-time NBA All-Star and a four-time All-NBA Team selection, twice on the second team and twice on the third team. Gasol has won two NBA Championships, both with Los Angeles Lakers.
Standing at 7ft, Pau was born in Barcelona. His parents both played basketball in organized leagues. His father, Agusti, stood 6 ft. and 3 inches, and his mother, Marisa, was 6 ft. 1 inch. Gasol began playing basketball as a center with his school team, Llor before he eventually signed with Cornella. At 16, he began playing for Barcelona’s junior team. He won the 1998 Albert Schweitzer Tournament and FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship. After moving to the senior team, he played just 25 minutes in the Spanish ACB League’s 1998-99 season, averaging 13.7 minutes per game in the ACB the following season. His final season in the ACB saw him average 12.4 points and 5.8 rebounds in 24.7 minutes per game. Barcelona won the Spanish National Cup in 2001 and Gasol was named Most Valuable Player.
Gasol was selected by the Atlanta Hawks after entering the 2001 NBA Draft. The Hawks traded his draft rights to Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for Shareef Abdur-Raheem.

Pau’s first season with the Grizzlies saw him become the first foreign player to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He was the only team member to play in all 82 games that season where he averaged 17.6 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. In his second season, Gasol led the team in scoring with 19.0 points per game and for the second year in a row, played all 82 games. He scored his 3,000th point on October 31, 2003, against Boston Celtics and grabbed the 1,500th rebound of his career on November 12, 2003 against Orlando Magic.
Gasol missed the first game of his career during his third year, with a foot injury on April 5, 2004. The injury snapped his string of 240 consecutive games played. Gasol and the Grizzlies made their first trip to the NBA Playoffs in 2004 against San Antonio Spurs. Despite having 22 points in Game 4 of the series (the highest by any Grizzlies), his team was eliminated in the first round, not wining any game against Spurs.

January 11, 2005, he became the 10th fastest player to reach 5,000 points/500 blocks since 1973-74 after he scored 31 points and blocked four shots in a game against the Indiana Pacers. He also helped the Grizzlies reach the playoffs for the second time in his career. However, they were eliminated in the first round and did not win any game against the Phoenix Suns.
Gasol became the franchise’s all-time leading rebounder in his fifth year, in a game against the New York Knicks where he grabbed his 3,072nd rebound in a Grizzlies uniform. He made 29 consecutive free throw attempts from January 24-28, tying the second best mark in Grizzlies history, including two straight games going 12-12 from the line, tying the best single mark in franchise history. Gasol and the Grizzlies made it to the playoffs for the third time but were eliminated in the first round again, not winning a single game against the Dallas Mavericks.

Gasol played his first NBA All-Star Game on February 9, 2006, in Houston, Texas, as a reserve center for the Western Conference. At the time, Gasol was one of four players ranked among Western Conference forwards in the top ten in points, rebounds, assists and blocked shots. Gasol later missed the first 23 games in the 2006-07 season after he suffered a broken foot near the end of Spain’s semifinal win over Argentina in the 2006 FIBA World Championship. Spain won the tournament and he was named Most Valuable Player. He had a season high 34 points, the most by a Grizzly that season and eight rebounds, tying a career-high and franchise record with eight blocks on January 29 agaisnt the Sacramento Kings, and surpassed Shareef Abdur-Rahim as the franchise’s all-time leader in free throw attempts on January 31 against Dallas Mavericks. On February 6, that same season, he became the all-time franchise leader in field goals made in a game against the Houston Rockets and all-time franchise leader in minutes played on February at Dallas. He surpassed Shareef Abdur-Rahim as the Grizzlies’ all-time leading scorer on March 7, 2007, against the Toronto Raptors (7,809 points). He recorded his second career triple-double against Utah Jazz, with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 12 assists, 2 blocks and 1 steal.

Memphis traded Gasol to Los Angeles Lakers on February 1, 2008 along with a 2010 second round draft pick for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron Mickie, the rights to Marc Gasol, his younger brother, and 2008 and 2010 first round draft picks. There were controversies surrounding his trade at that time involving head coach Chris Wallace and owner Michael Heisley. At the time of Gasol’s departure, he held twelve franchise records including games played, minutes played, field goals made, free throws made and attempted, offensive, defensive and total rebounds, blocked shots, turnovers and points. Per game statistics, he leads Memphis Grizzlies in defensive and total rebounds along with blocked shots
Gasol has also made success with the Spanish Team, winning the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the 2009 and 2011 EuroBasket tournaments, being chosen as the M.V.P. in the first two. He also won silver medals at the 2003 and 2007 EuroBasket, and the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games. He was the highest-scoring player of the 2004 Summer Olympics amongst all his other achievements. He’s also a UNICEF ambassador and has repeatedly taken part in different campaigns.
