A fun fact is a tidbit of interesting or entertaining trivia. It’s a short fact that can be about anything, as long as it is fun and interesting. Today, we’ll be telling you things you didn’t know about the Grizzlies or probably missed.

1. The original name for the Vancouver Grizzlies was going to be the Vancouver Mounties. The name
wasn’t used because the Royal Canadian Mounted Police objected. The RCMP are colloquially known as the “Mounties”.

2. The first draft pick in Grizzlies’ history was Bryant “Big Country” Reeves, who played his entire career with the Grizzlies (1995-2001).

3. In 2008, Hamed Haddadi debuted with the Grizzlies, becoming the first Iranian to play in the National Basketball Association. He currently plays for Nanjing Monkey King of the Chinese Basketball Association.

4. Malick Badiane who only played with the Grizzlies’ summer squad in the Las Vegas Summer league, has 18 brothers and sisters.

5. Former GM Chris Wallace never played or coached at any professional level of basketball This is very rare in pro sports.

6. Only five 8th seeded teams have managed to win a series versus the number 1 seeded team. Memphis Grizzlies happens to be among these five after they defeated the San Antonio Spurs in 2011.

7. The only coach in the Grizzlies’ history to win the NBA Coach of the Year Award is Hubie Brown. He won it in 2004, after the team made the playoffs for the very first time.

8. Grizz the Grizzlies’ Mascot was initially “a fat and furry” mascot. His fur was brown and shaggy and his belly was round and saggy, bursting from the confines of his too-small jersey.

9. The Grizzlies are yet to formally retire a number. Although they have announced plans to retire their first number at an as-yet-undetermined time.

10. Allen Iverson is the only player in the Memphis Grizzlies Hall of Famers. He was inducted in 2016.

12. Memphis Grizzlies is the only professional basketball team in the state of Tennessee.
